Research Project

The retina, a highly specialized neural tissue crucial for vision, and its adjacent supporting layer, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), depend on lysosomes for efficient cellular waste clearance to preserve structure and function. Dysfunctional lysosomal activity in either tissue has increasingly been linked to a range of vision-threatening disorders, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa. My project aims to profile the proteomic and metabolic landscape of lysosomes in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) under healthy conditions and in the context of aging and inherited retinal disorders caused by lysosomal gene mutations, using both in vitro and in vivo systems. By integrating multi-omics approaches with the LysoIP technique, we aim to determine how perturbations in lysosomal function contribute to retinal dysfunction and diseases. This work will provide critical insights into the mechanisms by which lysosomal disruption affects retinal health and may reveal new avenues for therapeutic intervention.
