Research Project

MFSD8-associated neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a severe lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive neurodegeneration and the accumulation of storage material within cells. Although MFSD8 is predicted to function as a lysosomal transporter, its precise molecular role and how its loss leads to lysosomal dysfunction remain poorly understood. Our research focuses on uncovering the exact biological function of MFSD8, investigating how its deficiency disrupts lysosomal homeostasis. To achieve this, we will apply cutting-edge technologies, including LysoIP and multi-omics approaches such as proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics, to systematically profile lysosomes under healthy and MFSD8-deficient conditions. The studies will leverage CRISPR-engineered cellular and animal models as well as patient-derived cells to closely mimic disease-relevant states. By comprehensively mapping the molecular changes driven by MFSD8 loss, this work aims to clarify how lysosomal dysfunction contributes to neurodegeneration and to identify new therapeutic targets for MFSD8-related disorders.

Fun Facts

I love playing the piano and staying active through skiing—though living in Saudi means I now spend more time playing squash and learning how to swim. I’m always excited to pick up new sports and enjoy exploring different ways to stay moving and challenged!
